Quirón Bilbao at the XIX World Congress on Fertility and Sterility in Durban (South Africa)
The IFFS World Congress is a triennial meeting in which educational symposia are held, together with discussions and debates on scientific aspects of infertility. IFFS Scientific Committee selected the oral-communication entitled "Influence of different selection criteria on success rates of homologous intrauterine insemination" to be presented at the Meeting in the first days of May 2007. The study, presented by Prof. Gorka Barrenetxea Ph D, analysed the results of intrauterine insemination (IUI) among couples treated from January 2004 to December 2006 at Quirón Bilbao. Overall, the study confirmed the efficacy of IUI with a cumulative pregnancy rate of 75.9% after 4 cycles. The key message of the oral communication was that strict patient selection criteria and a limitation of the number of cycles to be performed are of paramount importance in the success rate of an IUI program. Once strict criteria are fulfilled, the study suggested that clinical characteristics are far more important in predicting treatment success than previously reported sperm parameters of intrauterine insemination.
